It helps enormously if you mention your device, your iOS version, and what you were doing at the time. If a creature was identified wrongly, the species name it gave and the one it should have been is perfect.

Common questions

How does identification work?

Photograph a creature, frame it, and Menagerie identifies the species and writes it up as an exhibit entry — field marks, habitat, diet, taxonomy, conservation status and a natural range map. The photograph is sent to Google's Gemini model for identification; your location is never sent with it. See the privacy policy for the detail.

It identified the wrong creature. Can I correct it?

Yes. On the reveal card tap Not quite right? Choose another and Menagerie will offer the other species it considered, ranked, and rewrite the entry for whichever you pick. It also lists alternative common names, so a creature you know by a different name isn't mistaken for a wrong answer.

What do I get free, and what is Menagerie+?

Menagerie is free to use with ten AI identifications a month. Logging a creature by typing its name is always unlimited and never uses your allowance.

Menagerie+ unlocks unlimited identifications, honours and insights for every hall, rarity breakdowns, "On this day" memories, multiple photos per creature, and high-resolution exhibit cards. It comes as a monthly or annual subscription (the annual includes a free trial), or a one-off Lifetime purchase.

How do I manage or cancel a subscription?

Subscriptions are handled by Apple, not by Menagerie. Open Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your device to change or cancel. Cancel at least 24 hours before a period ends to avoid the next renewal. If you've bought Lifetime or reinstalled the app, tap Restore Purchases on the Menagerie+ screen.

Does my collection sync between devices?

Yes — through your own private iCloud, as long as you're signed into the same Apple Account and left sync on. If something looks missing, check that iCloud Drive is on and the device has been online. Photographs can take a moment to arrive after the entries do.

How do I remove a creature?

Open it and choose Remove from collection at the bottom of the page. That removes the specimen, its sightings and its photographs. It can't be undone.

Why is a creature's range map showing somewhere I've never been?

That map is the species' natural range worldwide — where the animal lives in general, not where you met it. Your own encounters are on the Your sightings map further down the page, and on the Map tab.

Does it work without a signal?

Cataloguing, browsing and typing a creature's name all work offline. Identifying from a photograph needs a connection; where possible Menagerie falls back to Apple's on-device model, which is less accurate on species than the cloud model.
